Heading Home: Releasing & Healing Ideas of Home [NYC]

  • Maha Rose 97 Green St G3 Brooklyn, NY 11222 (map)

"We are all just walking each other home." - Ram Dass

In this 2 hour workshop we will explore our internalized constructs and desired expressions of “Home,” and the values that are important to us in creating an experience of Home.

This time of year — holidays and its cadre of expectations, end of year work pressures, and even the seasonal transition into shorter days — can be quite emotionally exhausting and taxing to our bodies and nervous systems. It can even trigger past traumas or abuses, making it even more challenging to create and enjoy the many gifts of this season.

We all require the grounding energies of safety and support to flourish. Some may call this “Home” — where we can process emotions and experiences, rest deeply within to receive the nourishment of our life experiences, and where we can feel freedom from fear to dream, create, and take action in our lives.

“Home” can be thought of as a place or location—where we grew up, where we live now, or a "home away from home." We might think of it in terms of the people in our lives — constellations of relationships such as family, friends, etc.  It might even be defined as more of an intangible state we travel to — in our minds, in our creative works, in our spiritual practices, in our hearts. Or, more physically, like a snail that carries its "home" on its back, we may consider our own Body as Home, or the breath, our hearts, as home.

As adults we are empowered to create our own identity and relationship to Home, one that is uniquely ours, which may or may not be built upon the bedrock of our birth home or family.

Some of us may be healing our relationship to Home and childhood experiences of trauma or abuse, or grieving the loss of home as we once knew it. Some may feel a sense of living in an “almost” home - our bedroom as home but sharing a space with roommates that may or may not support the best of ourselves. Some may even feel they have the home experience they desire yet wish to deepen an exploration of their own identity within that home.

The practices of Yoga Nidra (“sleep meditation”), somatic experiencing, and journaling exercises will support you in releasing emotions stored in the subconscious and unconscious mind, and re/defining your own sense of Home — as it shows up for you now, and as you’d like it to be in the future.

This workshop experience is centered on a trauma-Informed approach, honoring the nervous systems of all individuals and welcoming all self expressions and life experiences with care and love.

Note: You do not need to identify as having experienced trauma in order to benefit from the workshop, however, some discussion of trauma will be included in teaching the tools offered.
